Since the beginning of the pandemic, it has been a concern whether it’s safe to fly or not. Travelling during the pandemic is not recommended if it’s for non-essential purposes. But if you need to travel, you must keep your safety and well-being as your top priority. I travelled from Toronto to New Delhi last month when India was at the peak of COVID-19 cases. Based on my experience, here are some useful tips for flying to have a happy and safe journey.

1. Select the window seat

While enjoying an astonishing view above the clouds, you can be at a safe distance from the people on the aisle. Window seats increase your safety in flight from COVID-19 than the middle and aisle seats. Aisle seats can put you at a higher risk because of the nearby traffic of people passing by. Make your seat selection 24 hours before your flight by checking in online. You can also book your guaranteed spot by adding in few dollars after buying your flight ticket.

2. Consider booking neighbour-free seats

If you can’t afford to be in the business class, there is a less expensive option with similar benefits. Some airlines offer an Economy Neighbour-Free option when they have free seats available. In this option, you can have up to three adjoining seats all to yourself. This gives an added benefit since there will be no neighbours at the side and you can lie down and relax. This option is usually available 72 hours before the flight.

3. Be aware of the air travel guidelines of your destination

You might need to show a negative COVID-19 test result before departure. You might also have to get tested on the arrival before you go ahead and quarantine for at least 14 days. Make sure to go through the air travel restrictions and make arrangements based on that. You can find the travel guidelines and regulations on the website of your airline. You can also find the up to date information on the travel website of your destination country.

4. Use surgical face masks instead of N95 or cloth masks

Wearing a face mask is a mandatory option if you are travelling on an airplane. Surgical face masks are effective to prevent the airborne transmission of infections. When it comes to having a safe and comfortable flight, I would recommend them over N95 or cloth masks. They are lightweight, more breathable and comfortable to wear. Bring a pack of surgical face masks and make sure to change them from time to time during your next flight.

5. Bring hand wipes or a hand sanitizer

Keeping your hands clean is one of the most important measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. A small bottle of hand sanitizer or a packet of hand wipes will help you big time during your next flight. Both of these disinfectants are effective against infections causing germs. You can use them before and after dining, and whenever you settle down after leaving your spot. If necessary, you can also use hand wipes to clean your TV screen, remote, dining table and armrests.

6. Earplugs, Neck Pillow and Eye mask for sleeping

If you’re in for a long haul, you might want to zone out for most of your journey. Earplugs can help protect your ears from the loud noise produced by airplane engines. They also help prevent ear pressure discomfort caused during air travel. I would recommend using small disposable earplugs instead of expensive noise cancellation devices. Disposable earplugs are very comfortable and it wouldn’t be a bummer if you woke up missing one of those. A neck pillow and eye mask will further increase your chances to fall asleep on your long flight.

7. Say no to caffeine but an alcoholic drink might help

It’s not a good idea to have your favourite coffee before or during the flight. Caffeine energizes your central nervous system which keeps your mind alert and awake. You will have trouble falling asleep for the rest of your flight. But an alcoholic drink after your meal might help you fall asleep. During my last flight, I ordered a fine scotch whiskey on the rocks after my meal. It was nice and smooth, the next thing I remember is we were landing in Abu Dhabi for our first layover. I slept for 7 hours straight on an airplane.

Is It Safe To Fly Right Now?

The risk of contracting COVID-19 in an airplane is not as high as you might think it is. The number of cases linked with the in-flight transmission is close to negligible. The International Air Transport Association reported only 50 confirmed cases in 2020. Airlines have been putting in a lot of effort to ensure the safety of passengers on board.

As a precautionary measure, each airplane gets sanitized in depth before boarding. The airflow inside of an airplane is a lot faster than in many enclosed buildings. Half of the air inside of it is fresh air from outside while the other half is through HEPA filters. HEPA filters are also used in hospitals to filter out 99.99% of airborne pathogens. On top of that, wearing a mask provides an extra layer of protection.

Have a safe flight!
